Search Engine Magic

While testing some new blogging or CMS software I usually create a subdomain for the testing domain so have a seperate space for my tests to take place and after the tests done, I can just delete the subdirectory and all work is gone. Wel that is convenient and search engines did not pickup, as I do not place any links to those test "subsites".

Today I got a letter from one company saying that I am stealing their content without their approval. I thought that's strange how do they know if I was the only one that know about the subdomains I use for testing. This particular subdomain was loaded with Wordpress and component that get's content from RSS feeds. I setup it and forgot (total time ~5days).

I have checked google for indexed pages like: "site:subdomain.mysite.ext" and I see I have ~20indexed pages. Strange I though, as I do not have any links to that subdomain, so how Google can find it and index? Also I checked Google for a title of one of the articles (will not display it here) and I was in 5th place on Google!!! The original article was in 8th position, that made me laugh.

So here are questions:

  1. How Google accessed my site if I did not placed any links to it and not submited to Google for index.
  2. How can I rank better that the original article if my page has been just indexed, and original page was indexed for a few years?

Answers:

  1. Can be because original site somehow added a link of the script that was fetching the articles (it look impossible to me) .
  2. No clue, maybe something wrong with Google or the original site got some bad incoming links so listings were ranked worse that mine.

Well actually none questions are answered, it's total mistery.

Will update as I get any other news.
